Flag Diary - WHAT PROTECTS

Flag Diary (What Protects) is a new program of public works developed through a series of community quilting workshops. With support of the Idea Fund, 2023/2024 workshops accompanied an exhibition of the same name at Art League Houston. Workshops cover a brief history of quilting in the U.S. and introduce participants to contemporary artists using quilting and/or fiber art in socially- and historically-engaged ways.

Participants learn multiple embroidery stitches and create their own protection patches to add to the community quilt. These patches were hung on the side of the Art League building, and will be assembled into a fully-realized quilt through a series of future quilting bees.

This project hopes to build community ties while considering quilts as familial diaries, testing how these complicated objects speak the language of public discourse. More to come at different venues in 2024 and beyond!
